On behalf of Akoma, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Paris family on the passing of their loved one, Cherry! Akoma was pleased to recognize Cherry and her sister Mary who both worked at the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children in the early 70's. Although Cherry didn't work at the Home as long as her sister Mary both were outstanding staff who had a love for the children and an advocate for change. Akoma was pleased to have Paris Lane installed in honor of these two wonderful ladies in our new community development named Fairfax Homes on the Akoma property. Paris Lane consists of 8 homes for Black women and their children. There is no doubt that this is a fitting tribute to Cherry and her sister who I’m sure would be pleased that these families have a place to call home. I personally had the opportunity to meet Cherry at many AUBA Church functions and she always took a keen interest in how I was doing, where I was working and would ask about my siblings. It wasn’t the casual, how are you that may people ask but a genuine interest in how I was doing. I’m honoured to have known her and for the time she spent advocating for equality for African Nova Scotians. To the Paris family, thank you for sharing her with all of us! My prayers are with you all today. Matthew 5:4 “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”

To the Family of the Late Cherry Paris: I wish to extend my sympathy to the Paris family on the loss of Cherry. Even though I did not know many of her family members I do remember her late brother - Gus - when he and Sharon were posted to Cornwallis. Cherry was working in Digby at the time and I had the pleasure of knowing the 3 of them. At the time I was employed at the Insurance Office, in Digby - JJ Brittain Ltd. So many moons ago! Remember all the wonderful times you created with Cherry along her life's journey and these will help ease the pain you are experiencing. I will keep you all in my prayers and thoughts. I am so saddened your time with us is over. I will never forget the lovely care packages you used to send us at Christmas when we were growing up in North Bay. Every year you never failed to remember and acknowledge us and we could always count on your trusty box of calendars, socks and treats! I also have fond memories chasing the tide in front of your house when we visited you as young boys. You were always so mindful of watching out for our safety while still allowing us to have fun. I was so surprised and honoured to read about all of your accomplishments while you were on Earth, and am so proud to be related to you. You were so humble and gentle I was unaware of the impact you had on all the communities you were a part of. You will forever be a core memory of my childhood and as geography, work and adulthood can cause distance, you were always in my prayers. Fly with the angels, Aunt Cherry. To all of the family and many friends so sorry to hear about my cousin Cherry passing. Cherry was an amazing woman that everyone loved and looked up to. She just didn’t help the black community in her home town but she helped everyone in Nova Scotia. She lived her life doing good for others no matter who they were ,helping out in anyway she could. Everyone that knew her will miss her and will always remember her. She will live on in all of her accomplishments,and all of her good deeds,in our thoughts and in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of my family and her many friends. Rest in peace and thank you for making this place a better place to live for everyone in Nova Scotia.

I was so blessed to teach at Temperance Street School with Cherry for three years in the late 1960's. She became a cherished friend, an awesome mentor and role model. A truly gifted teacher, she was well respected by fellow staff, parents and students. Every tribute written about her is the result of her hard work, determination and vision to see the best in others and her desire to make this world a better and more equitable place for all. To the Paris Family, whom I regard as dear friends, I was saddened to read of Chery's passing. I am currently out of the country visiting my family, but I want you to know that my heart is with you at this time of great loss. What a lovely well-deserved tribute to Cherry's legacy that Beverly and Sandra wrote as they developed Cherry's obituary. Cherry was a wonderful woman who gave so much to others all her life and whose presence and contributions will be missed by so many. It is said that it is not as much what someone says, but how they make us feel. Cherry had that ability to make others feel that they were cherished and as a result others were motivated to be the best they could be. My deepest sympathy goes to you all.

To the family of the late Ms Cherry Paris Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of Ms Paris, a remarkable woman. I still remember her coaching us during the BYF (Baptist Youth Fellowship) oratorical contests. That was sixty years ago. She was kind, generous and encouraging. To the Paris family, we are thinking of you at this difficult time. Cherry was truly a pillar of the family and community - her knowledge of family history and the community was immense. I remember many conversations and her mentorship on human rights related matters, as I grew in my career. But the teaching I received when I was younger helped shape my career choices. Add to that the relationship I shared with her sister Debbie (Beverly) and her family, which built the solid foundation for who I am today. My sincere condolences to the Paris family with the passing of Deacon Cherry. She will be truly missed! Deacon Cherry always had a kind word for everyone and that infectious smile, you could see all across the room wherever, she was. She could pick you up when you were down; she exactly what to say. To the Paris Family, I extend my sincere condolences to you. Deacon Cherry was a wonderful gift to the body of Christ on earth. She was a testimony to her faith in all that she said and did. When I relocated to New Glasgow, her winning smile and warm personality immediately put me at ease and made me feel welcome. There are persons in every congregation who make being the pastor a joy. Deacon Cherry was one such person. When I was examined by the CBAC to have my credentials recognized, she went with me. When I became active in the Pictou County Council of Churches, she was there. When my family visited from the US, she went on excursions with us. At various speaking engagements, and even when I left Second Baptist and was being inducted at Cornwallis Street, she was there. When I earned my doctorate at Acadia, she came to celebrate with me. Always an encourager and supporter, her friendship and prayers have left an indelible impression on my ministry and my life. May God comfort your hearts as you trust in his truth that declares, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord...they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.'
