Obituary of Helen Charlotte Guthro

Helen Charlotte Guthro, 91, Walkerville, passed away peacefully, Sunday, February 9, 2025, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in New Glasgow, she was the daughter of the late William Joseph and Ann Burnetta “Annie” (Cox) Avery.  In earlier years, Helen served with the Royal Canadian Air Force for several years. She married her husband, Kenneth in 1957 and together they raised three children. When her children were older, she became a supervisor with the former East Pictou Rural High School for many years. Helen was an accomplished artist, having created many oil paintings, primarily focusing on nature and landscape, and some portrait. Her passion for painting will be long remembered by her family and her paintings, treasured. Helen’s talents extended to sewing, knitting, quilting and crocheting. Her hands were constantly creating “works of art”. Helen was current on every aspect of the Canadian political scene and enjoyed debating the merits of any given policy or program. She never missed watching “Power and Politics” on CBC each evening. Helen was an ardent hockey fan spending countless hours in local rinks watching her grandchildren play.  She was an avid reader of historical fiction, political commentary and many other genres. Helen was a loving, caring and intelligent lady who has left a wonderful legacy to follow. She will be lovingly remembered by her family forever.

Surviving are her children, Dawn (Gary) Humphreys, Walkerville; Steven (Kippy) Guthro, Bailey’s Brook; Beth (Jeff) Williams, Ponds; grandchildren, Meghan, Luke, Jake, Janae, Charlotte and Lauren; great-grandchildren, Spencer, Kate, Jordan, Andrew, Lilah, Braelyn, Lydia, Hendrix, Remi, Quinn, and Layne; sister, Hazel Hughes (Ulysse), Thorburn; brother, John (Judy) Avery, Truro; many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth Roy Guthro; granddaughter, Shona; sisters, Mary “Dolly” Arthurs and Isabel Avery; brothers, Joseph Avery, Cecil Avery and a brother in infancy.
