Obituary of Barry George Patterson

Barry George Patterson, 81, Woodfield, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at home surrounded by his family.

Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late John George and Jean Vera (MacKinnon) Patterson.  Barry was employed as an electrician with the former Hawker Siddeley, Trenton, the Pictou Shipyard and the former Maritime Steel, New Glasgow.  To his family and friends, he was “Mr. Fix It All” as there was nothing he could not fix or repurpose. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. He looked forward to every spring when he tapped trees for maple sugar which he processed to maple syrup. In the summer he and his family spend many enjoyable hours at the beach where they never left without a couple buckets of clams. Barry was especially kind to animals, and was always accompanied by his companions, Fefie, Hopper and Max. He was an amateur astronomer, spending countless hours studying and watching the stars. Barry was an avid reader; besides astronomy, he enjoyed local history. He enjoyed life to the fullest.  Barry enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, playing the guitar and fiddle, singing, dancing and sharing a good time with those he loved.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Jeanie Patterson; children, Gregory (Tannis), Kitimat, B.C.; Melissa, Woodfield; Melanie (Brian), Eureka; grandchildren, Merissa, Emily, Alanna, Luke, Kyle, Shaila, Kiara and Brianna; numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, John and Jean Patterson, he was predeceased by his sister, Judith Carole Thomsen.

The family will receive visitors 1-1:50 p.m. Sunday, May 4 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating.  Interment will be in French River Cemetery.
