Obituary of Keith Stuart Smith
Keith Stuart Smith, Q.B.E., 78, Thorburn, passed away peacefully Thursday May 15, 2025, in the Aberdeen Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late John Bernard and Veronica “Ronnie” (Parsons) Smith. Keith built a number of businesses but was most recognized as the operator of Red Devil Enterprise which he operated for over 30 years. He enjoyed ‘wheeling and dealing’ and was always trying to come up with the next new thing. Keith experienced many successes in life, however, his greatest accomplishment was shared with his wife, Marion, together they raised three wonderful daughters. His pride in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was most visible in his “Red Devil” grin when displaying photos or sharing stories with friends and colleagues. Keith loved a good laugh and share a joke. He had a nickname for everyone including his daughters, Iris, Gouche and The Baby. Throughout his life, Keith lived by the motto that true education is “Qualified By Experience”. Keith will be missed for his “out of the box” thinking, honesty, humour and devotion to family.
Survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marion Smith (Sheparski). Love of his life, mother to his children, partner and companion and nurse to his needs in his final months. Proud father of twin daughters, Darleen (Tim) Chislett, Westville and Doreen (Peter) Stuart, Bridgewater, and Tanya Smith, Trenton; cherished Papa to grandchildren, Jordan (Taylor) Stuart, Kelsey (Ryan) Harbers, Evan Stuart, Colin (Lauren) Chislett, Cooper (Maddy) Stuart and Emma Stuart; great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Ben Harbers; sisters, Nina (James) O'Hara, MacLellan's Brook; Jane (Lloyd) Kenny, White Hill; brother, Alfred (Jeanie) Smith, Greenwood; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by nephew, George Smith; sister-in-law, Diane (Lauchie) MacKenzie.
A Celebration of Life will be held 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, May 20 in Union Presbyterian Church Hall, Thorburn. A private graveside service will be held in Thorburn Cemetery with Mr. John Reeves officiating.
Keith’s family wish to thank Dr. Oseme Eriakha, Pictou County VON, Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Team and Unit for the wonderful care provided. They wish to thank the many family and friends who visited, provided food, telephoned and texted – your kindness was very comforting to Keith and very much appreciated.
