Obituary of David MacPhee

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Harold David MacPhee, age 66. David passed peacefully in his home in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on May 24, 2025. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle, a proud serviceman in the Royal Canadian Navy, and friend to many who had the pleasure to know him.

Born in New Glasgow on April 3rd, 1959, he was a son of the late Harold Austin and Lois Jean (Livingstone) MacPhee.

David is survived by wife Cindy; son, Justin MacPhee (Jessica Lavoie); daughters, Sherry Narayan (Raj), Angie Matkovich (Lorne), and Darlene; twelve grandchildren Brady, Jayden, Rylan, Keyaira, Nina, Makayla, Nyla, Kaiden, Sierra, Ethan, Quinton and Kye;  two great granddaughters, Oaklynn and Aradia; sisters, Kathy Mackenzie, Heather Bushulak (Doug), Marlene MacGrath (Vernon), Barb Miller (Joby), and Michelle MacNeil (Darrell); brother, Gordon MacPhee (Terri-Lynn); brother-in-law, Brian Fraser; numerous nieces and nephews.

David was predeceased by his father, Harold MacPhee and mother, Lois (Livingstone) MacPhee; sister, Jessie (MacPhee) Fraser; grandson, Chayse MacPhee; nephew, Raymond Miller.

David was a long-time hockey fan. He played hockey in his youth and, after moving to Edmonton, Alberta in the early 80s, became a lifetime Edmonton Oilers fan, and could often be seen around town proudly wearing his blue, orange and white Oilers jacket.

David moved back to his hometown of New Glasgow in 2019. He very much enjoyed reconnecting with his family in Nova Scotia, talking about days-gone and making a new life in the province he called home. He adored his sister Kathy, who was his most loyal and truest friend, with whom he shared a home along with his niece Hayley. He spent countless joyful nights hanging out with his brother Gordon and nephew Jamie in their garage, conversing, dreaming, playing darts and working on various projects.

David was a member of Stellarton Legion Branch 28, where he was a member of the Tuesday Night Mixed Dart League. He made many new friends and even reconnected with old ones from his youth, something that was very important to him.

He was a fan of all genres of music, and enjoyed dancing and singing karaoke at local establishments such as the Stellarton Legion and backyard BBQs where he made a name for himself as the man who would sing just about anything, but could lull you to sleep with his rendition of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" or Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay".

David was an avid handyman, who was knowledgeable in just about any trade. He was passionate about genealogy, nature, gardening and the sea. His ability to recall past memories and events was uncanny, sometimes surprising you with the amount of detail he could provide. He loved to sketch and brainstorm ideas and thoughts on paper, and it wasn't uncommon to find a sketch on a scrap of paper with some amazing invention he had come up with. He loved fashion, especially footwear, hats and his trademark suspenders.

For those that knew him best, David was a deeply thoughtful and intelligent individual, who felt as much at home discussing astronomy or politics as he did conversing about fast cars and mechanic work. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. A one-of-a-kind soul who will be missed forevermore by those he leaves behind.

A private service for family will be held in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home. There will be with a celebration for David 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 3 in the Stellarton Legion, where friends and family are welcome to attend, so we may share stories and laughter in remembrance of him.
