Obituary of George Edward Stewart

George Edward Stewart passed away peacefully at Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou, on July 1, 2025, one day after his 84th birthday, after living with dementia for the past several years.

Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late George Maitlyn "Mait" and Clara Mae Stewart. George was raised in New Glasgow, spent his last years there and in between, and making his home in other communities, with Country Harbour being his favorite. George served with the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada until honourable discharge in 1971. Following that, he was employed with Michelin Tire, Granton for the next 21 years. George was supportive of his late wife Mariea in her various management placements with Kentucky Fried Chicken. He will be remembered for his kindness to the children and teens when he and Maria were working in church youth ministries. George was happiest when spending time in Country Harbour. Through faith, George is now united with his loved ones who have gone before.

Surviving are his sons, Arthur (Heather), Douglas (Carol); grandchildren, Kyle (Amanda), Allison (John) and lain; great-grandchildren, Richard, Terry, Jesse and Naomi; siblings, Jimmy (Joan), Jean, Mary (Joey), Barry (Jean), Brenda (Laurie) and Trudy (Warren); brothers-in-law, Blair, Barry and Harvey (Karen); many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mariea (Stone); foster son, Timmie; sister, Phyllis; sisters-in-law, Pat, Ruby, Annette and Bernice; brothers-in-law, Edmund and Billy.

In keeping with George and Mariea's wishes, they will be buried together with a graveside service at Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Country Harbour Mines, 1 p.m. Saturday, July 12.
