Obituary of Daniel Edward Atkins

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Daniel Edward Atkins of Westville.  Dan passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side in the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital on July 22, 2025.

Dan was born May 21, 1947, in New Glasgow to parents Hilary and Myrtle (MacGrath) Atkins, growing up in his dearly loved North End.  He was a true Carworker, being employed with Trenton Works for 42 years. 

Danny loved reading, dancing, camping, playing crib, word find puzzles, the beach (the sun), flashlights, the American West, old cars and he was known to have a couple of drinks of red wine but most of all Dan loved his family.  He met his wife Patsy in 1994, and they were together ever since. In the last 10 years Grampie Dan dearly enjoyed the company of his beloved grandsons, Liam and Lachlan, it was his favorite thing just to watch them and be present with them. Dan loved Melmerby Beach where he soaked up the sun for many of his younger years then later in his life travelled South visiting other countries with his favorite place being Cuba.  Dan loved camping and spent many summers at Harbour Lights Campground and Cranberry Campground having the time of his life meeting old friends and making new ones.  One of "Dan the Man's" true passions was playing crib, he could count the cards quicker than anyone, then count his opponents before they could. He could tell you anything about the history of the American West reading many books and watching movies and documentaries on the subject.

Dan was survived by his wife, Patsy (Smith) Atkins; sister, Marion (Tom) Park, New Glasgow; brothers, Delbert MacGrath (Elizabeth), New Glasgow; Harold Atkins (Reva), New Glasgow; Kevin Atkins (Dale), Prince Edward Island; stepson, Jeremy (Theresa) Smith, Millbrook: grandchildren, Liam and Lachlan Smith; brother-in-law, Sterling (Rachel), Priestville; sister-in-law, Marilyn English (Andrew), Westville; many nieces and nephews.

Dan was predeceased by his parents, Hilary and Myrtle (MacGrath) Atkins; mother and father-in-law, Frances and Will Smith; brother-in-law, David Smith; sister-in-law, Donna Carter; fur babies, Charlie and King.

The family will receive visitors 2-4 p.m. Friday, July 25 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow, with a reception to follow.
