Obituary of Irene Margaret Kirk

Irene Margaret Kirk, 95, Valley View Villa, Riverton, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully, Saturday, November 22, 2025, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.

Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late George William and Mary Catherine (Grant) Kirk. In earlier years, she operated Kirk’s Grocery store, Thorburn for her brother, Charlie. Irene was employed with the former Pepsis plant in New Glasgow for many years. 

She and her friend, Dorothy, opened the former ID Fashion, New Glasgow, which they operated for several years before selling. Prior to retirement was an insurance salesperson.  Irene was a world traveller and spent winters at her Florida home for many years. She enjoyed music and was an accomplished fiddle player and loved playing Cape Breton tunes.

The last surviving member of her immediate family, she is survived, Kathleen Kirk, Thorburn; nieces and nephews, Charlene (Allister) MacDonald, Stellarton; Velma (Gordon) Anderson, Avondale; Raymond (Dalene) Kirk, Thorburn; Betty (Lori) MacLean, Stellarton; George (Linda) Kirk, Thorburn; many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Abigale Kirk, Sarah Belle Ferguson and Florence MacLellan; brothers, John, Charles and Stanley; sister-in-law, Annie Kirk; brothers-in-law, William MacPherson and Clarence Ferguson.

The family will receive visitors 10 – 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2025, in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow, from where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. with Mr. John Reeves officiating. Interment will be in Thorburn Cemetery.
