Obituary of Karen Anita Greencorn

As much as we, her daughters, would have loved to write our mother’s obituary ourselves, she was very clear in her last wishes that we were to provide the obituary that she wrote prior to her passing.

It reads: “ It is with great sadness and much heartache that we announce the passing of our mother, Karen Greencorn (Cameron).

Karen was born in New Glasgow on March 15^th, 1964, to Elmer and Edna (Archibald) Cameron. She grew up in Hopewell, NS, with her three siblings, Kim, Ann-Marie, and Bernadette. She attended West Pictou High School and later went on to attend Nova Scotia Teachers College. She graduated from Teachers College in 1988 with her Child Development degree.

Her career started out primarily in daycares and eventually led her to working in local schools as an Educational Assistant. While she loved the work that she did within the school system, she found her true calling was working with individuals with varying forms of disabilities.

The latter part of her professional life was spent working at Riverview Home Corporation. Many of her coworkers became lifelong friends, and she created many bonds with the residents she loved to care for.

While Karen took much pride in her professional life, it was known to everyone just how much she loved being a mother. Karen loved her two daughters more than life itself, and she left this world making sure they knew how loved they were and how proud she was of them. She often said that her greatest achievement was becoming their mother and raising them into the beautiful, strong women they are today.

Karen is survived by her daughters, Shantel (Chris) Greencorn and Courtney Greencorn, both of New Glasgow and their father, Charles Greencorn. Siblings, Kim (Maureen) Cameron, Stellarton; Ann-Marie (Brad) Ross, Lower Sackville, and Bernadette (Kenny) Morrison, Pictou.

She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Clarence Cameron, Curtis Cameron, Jason Canning, Janelle (Joel) Ross, Jami-Leigh (Jeremy) Bishop, Kaitlyn (Evan) Milheron, Elissa (Jeff) Cramp, and Hannah Green. She had so much love for her great-nieces and great-nephews, as well.

Karen was predeceased by her parents, Elmer Cameron (1994) and Edna Laffin (2024); nephews,  Justin Green (2011) and Robbie Canning (2023), and her brother-in-law, Ron Ross (2014).

It is important to include the wonderful friends she is leaving behind, as they became family through the years to both Karen and her daughters. They are Bobbijo Mahar, Mike Sewell and his partner Bernard, Mimi Cyr, Tracy Malcolm, Kimmie Arnold and Donna Dixon.

It is also important to express just how much love Karen had for her two “fur babies” (dogs) Winnie and Boots, and her “fur grandchild” (dog) Georgia.

Visitation will be held 1-3 p.m. Saturday, July 25 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow followed by a eulogy read by Mike Sewell. Karen has asked that friends and family prepare happy or funny memories to share following the eulogy. A private reception will take place with immediate family and close friends at another location after the service.

Flowers from family and friends will be accepted, as these are the only flowers she wishes to have included in her service.

Donations can be made to animal shelters because, as she often said, “I like animals more than people”. She had a fondness for the SPCA in Stellarton, so we encourage any donation to be made there in her honour. “

She has asked that this postscript be left in her obituary as her last wish, so we – her daughters - have chosen to honour that. It reads:

“P.S. If you are wondering why Joan is not mentioned in my obituary, it is because she has never been a sister to me. In death, she doesn’t get to pretend that she cares, while in life she treated me so badly. This is and was my last wish.”

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the physicians and the nurses that cared for our mother both at the Aberdeen Hospital ICU, and the QEII 5.2 ICU. The latter of which made our transition from hopeful daughters into grieving ones slightly more bearable.

We both love you so much. You were the best mother, and we both promise to live our lives in honour of you. Thank you for being our mom.
