Obituary of William Vernon Eastwood

NEW GLASGOW – William Vernon Eastwood, 96, New Glasgow, passed away Friday, November 7, 2014 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late William Carl and Irene Margaret (MacKenzie) Eastwood. During the Second World War, he served as an instructor with the Pictou Highlanders in Canada and overseas, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He worked in merchandising menswear in various stores such as George A. Douglas & Company and Vernon Eastwood Men’s Wear both of New Glasgow, and McCurdy’s & Company, Sydney. Vernon was a member of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 34, New Glasgow, and the Abercrombie Golf and Country Club. Vernon was a past chancellor of Liberty Lodge No. 22, Knights of Pythias. In earlier years, Vernon was a volunteer with the New Glasgow Fire Department and a member of the Kiwanis Club in Sydney. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Gladys Edna (Tatton), New Glasgow; daughter, Nancy (Peter) Harding, St. Petersburg, Fla.; grandchildren, Nicki Hamilton, Bedford; Jeffery Hamilton (Irene), St. Petersburg; great-grandchildren, Vanessa and Madison. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Major Douglas Eastwood. In honour of Vernon’s wishes a private celebration of his life was held with interment in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
