Obituary of Peter Lawton
ABERCROMBIE – Peter Lawton, 86, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, formerly of Abercrombie, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, March 24, 2020 in the Manor, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Bradford, England, he was a son of the late John and Alice Hanna (Woodend) Lawton. Prior to moving to Canada, he served in the British Army. Peter, his wife and infant daughter, immigrated to Canada in 1959. He had been employed with Morris Chocolates and retired as district manager, Pictou and Antigonish, from Ben’s Bakery after 20 plus years of service. Peter was a member of St. George’s Anglican Church, New Glasgow, where he served in the choir and assisted where possible. He was a member Keith Lodge, No. 23, A.F. & A.M., Stellarton, a Past District Deputy Grand Master of Pictou County and Past Master of Curren Lodge, No. 68, A.F. & A.M., Hopewell. Peter was an avid curler and passionate about the welfare of animals. Although he was a proud Canadian, he never forsook his British heritage, nor his loyalty to the monarchy. Peter leaves a legacy of love and devotion to family.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Jean Margaret (Chadwick) Lawton; daughter, Susan Margaret Peckham, New Glasgow; sons, Stuart Mark Lawton, Truro; Stephen John Lawton (Glenda Gaudet), Halifax; grandchildren, Kathy, April, Amanda and Jenny; great-grandchildren, Justin, Jessica, Peter, Keith, Haley, Kyle, Bailee, Shelby, Klea and Mea; sister, Patricia Clough, England; sister-in-law, Georgina Lawton, England; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, David Lawton; brother-in-law, Donald Clough; niece, Sheryl Clough.
A public funeral service will be held at a later date.
