Obituary of Jacques Joseph Cormier

ABERCROMBIE - It is with great sadness that the remaining family of Jacques Joseph Cormier of New Glasgow and formerly of Halifax announce his passing on July 20, 2021, at the age of 87, after a long courageous battle with cancer where he continued to show his strength and determination. He passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow with his son, Craig, standing by his side. Dad was born in the Îles de la Madeleine, Que., and moved to Halifax as a young boy with his family. From this young age he developed a love of sports, qualities of leadership and fair play that he carried with him throughout his life. While Dad was only a teenager, he not only captained his baseball team but also coached them. Even up into his eighties you could see him at local sporting events watching games often with a family dog tucked under his arm. Dad’s family initially moved to New Glasgow when he began working in purchasing for Scott Paper where he also played and coached the Scott team in the Industrial Fastball League. He went on to work for and retire from the Nova Scotia Department of Health as a Business Consultant. Dad also coached me at various levels of minor hockey while growing up and continued throughout life to teach me qualities of being a good human being, not with words, but by being a living example of compassion and care for others. Throughout my life I never heard my Dad utter a bad word against any person and was always there to provide support and care of those in need. His loyalty to family and friends is beyond reproach. Dad is survived by his son Craig; grandson, Kai; son-in-law, Ken Johnson; brother, Eric; numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his loving wife Marilyn; daughter, Michele; father, Rene; mother, Odina; sisters, Bertha and Joan; brother, Donald; nephew, Paul; and great nephew, Johnathon. Dad was a loving husband, father, grand father, uncle, son, and friend. He is greatly loved and will be sadly missed not only by myself (Craig) but by the many friends and family, whose lives he has touched. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stellarton with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson presiding. Interment will be in Christ the King Cemetery, Trenton, 3:15 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2021, where friends and neighbours are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Jacques to the Canadian Cancer Society.
