Obituary of Myrtle Christine Greene

KENZIEVILLE – Myrtle Christine Greene, 83, Kenzieville, passed away peacefully after a courageous two year battle with cancer on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, surrounded by her loving family, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Avondale, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Clara (Fisher) Smith. After completing grade 12 by correspondence, Myrtle attended Normal College, Truro and taught school in Laggan, Marshy Hope and Meiklefield, before returning to school to obtain her secretarial diploma. She was employed for 10 years as secretary/librarian with the former East Pictou Rural High School. Returning to school, she attended the former Pictou Regional Vocational School, obtaining her medical terminology diploma and was employed as a medical secretary with St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish until retirement. She was a member of the Barney’s River Presbyterian Church, Kenzieville, where she served as treasurer for the Ladies Aid for many years, as well as a long time member of the Memorial Fund Committee. She greatly enjoyed her time spent quilting with the Kenzieville Quilters Club. Myrtle was a valued volunteer, serving her church and community. She loved and lived her life to the fullest. She had a deep passion for the performing arts, good literature, music and travel. She enjoyed dancing, quilting, card parties and watching her Blue Jays. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Surviving are daughters, Judith MacDonald, New Glasgow; Jayne MacDonald, New Glasgow; son, Michael E. (Bonnie) Greene, Amherst; grandchildren, Lisa (Jamie) MacGillivray, Stellarton; Leslie MacDonald (Trevor Wynott), Stellarton; Michael J. Greene, Grand Prairie, Alta.; Melissa Greene (Chris), Simcoe, Ont.; Johcey (Jessica) Greene, St. John, N.B.; Lauchlin MacDonald (Meaghan Purvis), Thorburn; Brennan MacDonald, Calgary, Alta; Daniel MacDonald, New Glasgow; great-grandchildren, Zoe, Maya and Gage MacGillivray, Ehran Greene, Austin and Abby Gore, Shylah Greene and Tyson Chitty; brother, Dr. Robert “Bob” (Kaye) Smith, St. John; sister-in-law, Lois Smith, Langley, B.C.; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Kenneth Greene; sisters, Gladys Robertson and Edna Roach; brother, Fisher Smith. The family will receive visitors 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Thursday, July 22nd in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 23rd in Barney’s River Presbyterian Church with Rev. Larry Welch officiating. Interment will be in Kenzieville Cemetery. Donations may be made in Myrtle’s memory to the Barney’s River Presbyterian Church, Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, Pictou County VON, Pictou County SPCA or the IWK Health Centre Foundation.
