Obituary of Harvey Donald MacLeod

NEW GLASGOW – Harvey Donald MacLeod, 90, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 16, 2012 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by his family. Born on March 17, 1922, he was a son of the late Alexander Leslie MacLeod and Florence Mary (Hook) MacLeod. During his youth, he was very active in Cubs and Scouts and became a King’s Scout. He was an overseas veteran of the Second World War who served in Canada, England and Europe with The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada. Upon his return from overseas he met the love of his life, Alma Pauline Dickson and they married on September 12, 1949 in New Glasgow. Harvey worked as a Dominion Customs Appraiser, Halifax, returning to New Glasgow as a Regional Collector and Superintendent of Antigonish and Guysborough counties for Customs and Excise Canada. He was a faithful member of First United Baptist Church, New Glasgow. He was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34, New Glasgow, Overseas Veteran Association, Normandy Veterans Association and the Pictou Highlanders. He was a proud member of Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders of Canada Veterans Association, Hamilton, Ont. He was a loving husband and father, who always put his wife and children before himself. Harvey had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, especially his little great-granddaughter, Grace. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Alma Pauline (Dickson); sons, Leslie Charles MacLeod, Calgary, Alta; H. D. Wade (Pia) MacLeod, Ottawa, Ont.; grandchildren, Benjamin, Craig, David, Laura, Alexander and Samantha; great-granddaughter, Grace; brothers, Gordon (Eve) MacLeod, New Glasgow; Norman (Kitty) MacLeod, Prince Edward Island; son-in-law, Norman Regier, Fall River; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by daughter, Patricia Regier; brothers, Douglas, Fred and Rod; sisters, Joan and Mabel. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20th in First United Baptist Church, New Glasgow with Rev. Dr. Morley Shaw and Rev. Randy Stanton officiating. Private interment will be in Abercrombie Cemetery. Family flowers only.
