My condonlences are extended. I didn't realize Bas was still in Nova Scotia. We could have been in contact from time to time if he had wanted.. We played soccer together for a number of years with Oland's Soccer Team. He was a tremendous colleague - one of the fastest defenders I had known. I played in the back line as a Centre Half or Center Back. He was so quick & dependable; it was areal pleasure to play along side him. He was an excellent cover and he could recover so fast if danger was imminent. He was a very nice fellow and I am sorry to hear of his passing. It was a shock to learn of Basi's passing. I studied with him at King's College in Halifax and shared residence life there in the mid-1960s. Since I returned to Pictou County a couple of years ago after 50 years away, mostly in Montreal, I have been meaning to look him up and renew a warm acquaintance. Alas, I am too late. My sincere condolences to his family here and back in St. Vincent, as well as his many friends, patients and admirers. His was a fine, bright soul.

I wish to express my condolences to the family of Dr. Basil Cole. The loss can really pain the hearts of all. Even though I didn't know Basil, we can look forward to the promise made in the Bible when "no resident will say: "I am sick"". Dr. Cole treated my late husband with compassion and also with a touch of humor that I appreciated but my husband not so much. Since then I have encountered him numerous times, he was always so personable. My last memory will be of last week visiting a friend in the Aberdeen and hearing him the corridor singing and then loudly saying with a laugh "Well I guess I will have to make rounds by myself as there are no nurses around" and off he went. He was one of a kind. On another note I am glad that I do not have to clean out the memorabilia from his office. Rest in peace Dr. Cole.

As I began my nursing career in Halifax I had the good fortune to work with "Bassie" Cole. Among the many who pass through their surgical residencies, Bassie stood out like few others in that era and nurses noticed. He was ahead of his time in how he accorded all a level of respect they were assumed to deserve unless proven otherwise. He worked tirelessly, taught incessantly, cared deeply. He practiced his craft with grace, intellect, and skill. His passion was obvious and he maintained his humility like few others When I learned he was taking a post at the Aberdeen, I knew my Pictou County family and friends would be well looked after should they need surgical care. And my faith was rewarded when year after year I learned of how people trusted and relied on him. His passing is a huge loss to be felt in many circles. Sandra& Bryce, I’m sure you’ve heard it said a million times now what a wonderful man he was. But for someone who feared every possible illness, he was always there to set you at ease. To say we all feel a sense of loss at this time seems to just not fit the bill. Basi was always here and his departure will resonate in our lives for a long time to come. Since my retirement I have not seen as much of Basi ( which was essentially daily ) but I did run into him at the hospital about 3 weeks ago and we both took the time to "catch up" so to speak. I would like to send my heart felt sympathy to the family of Dr Cole, He was one of the best surgeons and doctors i have ever met He took my mom to the OR in the middle of the night to put a pacemaker in that they had to have flown in from somewhere , And during to operation he said it did not work and he knew she would never make it through another operation she was so weak so he put a very expensive one in that they had on hand and when i talked to him after the surgery he said mom was a million dollar mama because he had to put a very expensive one in and that he would be in lot of trouble in the morning when his bosses find out . But that night he saved moms life and her 13 children got to spend a lot of more years with her and for that we will always be grateful and always remember him for putting her life even ahead of his job . Well anyone who ever knew my mom knew she had a heart of gold and i will always be thankful that she went in that OR that night with such a great surgeon that also had a heart of gold

Dear Sondra and Family, I was so shocked to hear of Dr. Cole’s sudden death! He was a wonderful, caring man and a brilliant surgeon. I remember when he first came to Pictou County and there was a welcoming gathering for him. It will be so painful to say farewell. Dr. Cole always reached out to help and gave the very best of himself to others. Thank you for all your years of service Doctor. You will be remembered with love and gratitude by so many for a very long time.

Losing Dr Cole is a great loss ! He was my surgeon and I had a procedure done not long ago and he said that he was not going to retire and that he loved his job.

You were my choice for surgeon for each of the six surgeries I had at the Aberdeen Hospital. Reason why is that you were extremely easy to talk to, fantastic bedside manner, would explain everything in a down to earth manner anyone could understand plus you had a fantastic sense of humor always a joke to tell with a great laugh and smile. Plus you were a great surgeon as well. You will be extremely hard to replace and will be missed by all in Pictou County. Rest in Peace my friend.

So very sorry for your loss. Dr.Cole was my surgeon and we were all prepared for my next surgery . My last appointment with Dr.Cole was comforting. He made you feel at ease and his humour and laugh made you smile. He was over worked and loved his career. He was always around. My prayers are with your family at this difficult time.
