Obituary of G. Donald Henley

NEW GLASGOW – George MacDonald “Donald” Henley, 87, New Glasgow, formerly of Barney’s River Station, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Upper Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Henry Farnell and Dora May (Dean) Henley. Donald worked in the forest industry throughout his life, along with serving as quarry foreman with Schurman Concrete Limited, in Barney’s River Station. He enjoyed playing the harmonica and interacting positively with people, always greeting with a smile. Donald was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Hazel (Farnell) Henely; children, Donald “Donnie” Henley, New Glasgow; Donna Crawford, New Glasgow; Melvin Henley, Dartmouth; Alvonia (Aldie) Dean, MacLellan’s Brook; Josephine “Josie” (Joe) Skinner, Antigonish; Edison (Stacey) Henley, Pine Tree; Faye (Paul) Arnfast, Truro; Leonard Henley, Fort St. James, B.C.; Fred Henley, Fort McMurray, Alta.; Lisa (Roger) Miller, East Stewiacke; grandchildren, Krystle (John Andrew), Candice (Shane), Ryan, Derek, Alissa, Randy (Morgan), Kaitlin (Brendan), Jami Lee, Jordan, Benjamin “Ben” (Stephanie), Shelby (Alex), Justyn (Meagan), Braydon (Madison), Mitchell (Emily), Shalyn (Berke) and Emma; great-grandchildren, Myiah, Kasey, Hayden, Isaac, Jax and Rylan; siblings, Adam (Kathy) Henley, Upper Musquodobit; Josephine Reid, Tillsonburg, Ont.; Dianna Tree, New Glasgow; Rhoda (Dennis) Harnish, Central West River; sisters-in-law, Hazel (Henley) Arthur, Upper Musquodobit; Luella Farnell, Dean; Greta Rector, Antigonish; Loretta Henley, New Glasgow; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by grandson, Paul MacInnis; son-in-law, Lee MacInnis; daughter-in-law, Karen Malcolm-Henley; siblings, Ida Fleming, Ralph Henley, Kaye Fleming and Gordon Henley; sisters-in-law, Gaynell Henley, Amy Fleming and Grace Lemmon; brothers-in-law, David Fleming, Jim Fleming, George Reid, George Farnell, Tom Fleming, Bob Fleming, Brody Henley and Bob Dort; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2nd in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3rd in the chapel with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Interment will be in Castle Hill Cemetery, MacLellan’s Brook. Family flowers only. Donations, if desired, may be made in Donald’s memory to Barney’s River District Fire Department.
