Obituary of Mary Margaret MacDonald
MUNROE AVENUE EXTENSION - It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mom, Mary Margaret (Kontuk) MacDonald, Westville, formerly of Munroe Avenue Extension, at home on Saturday, November 21, 2020, surrounded by her family.
Mom was born on August 7, 1935 to the late Archie and Mary (Kowolski) Kontuk. Mom and Dad (the late Ivor MacDonald) spent 46 great years together, raising three children: daughters, Susan (Terry) Chickness, Westville; Mary Enid Walsh, Munroe Avenue Extension; son, Ron MacDonald (Mary Jean Campbell), Munroe Avenue Extension. Grandma will be greatly missed by Darryl (Melody) Chickness, Hammond Plains; Nathan (Lori-Anne) Walsh, Airdrie, Alta.; and is now embraced by her grandson, Captain D. Matthew Walsh in Heaven. Great Grandma will be missed by Jessica, Devon and Caitlyn all of Hammonds Plains, and Hunter, Cohen and Brady of Airdrie. Also left to mourn are her younger brother, Fred and, many nieces and nephews.
Mom worked from home, looking after the books for Dad's businesses. She loved a good game of cards and for 50 plus years, she and seven friends took turns, weekly, going to each other's homes to play. Mom was a member of the Westville Heritage Club, the New Glasgow 55 Plus Club and played Seniors Bingo at the New Glasgow Legion. Mom never said no to a good competitive game of Skip Bo with anyone that stopped by. Road trips with us girls were always a good time, filled with much laughter. Gardening was a passion Mom thoroughly enjoyed, whether at home or at the cottage on Lochaber Lake. Mom and Dad travelled a lot in their years together, both down south with friends and across Canada in their motorhome. Some of her happiest times were spent at the cottage with family and friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ronald Ivor MacDonald; grandson, Captain D. Matthew Walsh; sister, Jean Leslie; brothers, John, Archie, Charlie and Bobby Kontuk.
In honour of our Mom’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
We very much appreciate the wonderful VON staff who cared for Mom and ask, if you desire, that donations in Mom’s memory be made to the Pictou County Victorian Order of Nurses. (Please click the underlined to donate online.)
Mom, “Grandma”, “we love and miss you – the gardens in Heaven will now be growing the most beautiful red roses”. Love, Susan (Terry), Mary Enid and Ron (Mary Jean).
