Obituary of Garfield Vaschel
NEW GLASGOW – Garfield Vaschel, 82, Truro, formerly of New Glasgow passed away, Tuesday, October 21, 2008 in Cedarstone Enhanched Care, Truro, surrounded by his family.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Stephen and Jean (MacKay) Vachel. Prior to retirement, he had been employed at the former Trenton Works and in earlier years as a cement finisher. He was a member of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow. Garfield volunteered with the Shepherd’s Lunch Room for many years. He was a member of Liberty Lodge No. 22 Knights of Pythias, the Dromatic Order of Knights of Khorassan and was a former member of the Orange Lodge. Garfield enjoyed fiddle music, dancing and playing crib with the boys. He was especially fond of his cats, Dice, Rita and Lucky. He enjoyed treating his grandchildren to donuts and sweets when they came to visit and was keenly anticipating the birth of his great, great-granddaughter.
Surviving are daughters, Karleen MacLaren, Merigomish; Jakye (Gerald) Bowman, Sharon MacPherson, New Glasgow; Sonja Vaschel, Halifax; grandchildren, Trevor, Apryl, Adam, Jamieleigh, Nick, Melaney, Tammy, Stephanie and Sophie; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Melba (Carl) Jordan, Truro; brothers, John (Wendy), Seattle, Washington; Stan (Shirley), Trenton; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Pearl Francis (Avery); son, Maurice; sister, Lorrayne; brother, Fred; son-in-law, Jack MacLaren.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity United Church with Ms. Lori Crocker, Diaconal Minister, officiating. Interment will be in Lorne Street Cemetery, New Glasgow.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, Canadian Cancer Society or the Shepherd’s Lunch Room.
