Obituary of Melody Denise Board
BOARD, Melody Denise “Mel” (Goodwin) - age 56, New Glasgow, passed peacefully, Monday, July 16, 2018 in the Aberdeen Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow, following a courageous seven-year battle with cancer, with her daughter Haileigh and son, Zach, at her side.
Born on August 30, 1961 in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late John Goodwin and Grace (Webber) (Goodwin) Rector. Mel was a graduate of New Glasgow High School and the Pictou Regional Vocational School. Early in her career, she worked for the Hon . Elmer MacKay, MP in the New Glasgow Constituency Office. Following, Mel was employed for several years with the Town of New Glasgow, initially with the John Brother MacDonald Stadium and most recently at the New Glasgow Town Hall.
Mel was active with the local Breast Cancer Support Group and participated many times in the Race on the River Dragon Boat Festival. She was a long-time volunteer with Heather Lanes Youth Bowling. Mel enjoyed paint nights, attending car races, shopping trips, reading, and especially time spent with family and friends. Her most precious times were those spent with her children and grandchildren. Known for her humor and creativity, Mel was “sunshine and laughter” to those in her presence. Her caring, generosity and thoughtfulness carried on after her passing through organ donation, permitting her sparkling eyes to continue to shine.
Melody is survived by her fiancé, Kevin Fraser, New Glasgow; daughter, Haileigh Board (Stephen MacGillivray), Lismore and her sons, Cohen and Kal Ross; son, Zachary Board (Emily O’Leary), Stellarton; sisters, Susan (Craig) Gallant, Drumhead; Laurel Goodwin (Bernie MacDonald), New Glasgow; Rhona (Ken) Hubley, Salem; sister-in-law, Janet Goodwin, Riverton; brothers, Andy (Sandi Malloy), Dave (Trina) and Peter (Lori), all of New Glasgow; Mike (Alisha), Cold Lake, Alta.; step-daughter, Amanda (Mark) Cyr, Westville and son, Logan Fraser; Angela Shreenan and children, Alanna, Lauryn and Bodhi, New Glasgow; chosen children, Ryan and Kaitlynn Board; numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by several aunts and uncles and long-time friend, Lorelei Pellerin.
Honouring Mel’s wishes the family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 20th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Mel’s life will be celebrated with a reception held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 30th in the New Glasgow Square, New Glasgow. All are invited to bring a favourite photo to create a keepsake scrapbook of memories.
