Joseph McNeil

Obituary of Joseph McNeil

STELLARTON – Joseph “Joe” McNeil, 81, Stellarton, passed away suddenly, Thursday, March 16, 2017 at home after a life well lived. Born in Glace Bay, he was one of sixteen children born to the late Joseph and Sadie (Royal) McNeil. He served from 1954 – 1957 with the Canadian Army in a paratrooper unit and was deployed to Germany. Prior to retirement, Joe had been employed as a fitter with the former Trenton Works for many years, where he was affectionately known as “Smokin’ Joe”. Retirement was only a title, he enjoyed keeping busy, finishing his last project on Wednesday. Joe believed that if “you helped yourself” then there was no limit to the help he was willing to give. A man of great character, tremendous work ethic, quick wit and sense of humour, Joe was truly his children’s hero. Surviving are his daughter, Brenda McNeil, Stellarton; sons, Glen McNeil, Caribou; Wayne McNeil, Churchville; Brian (Rose) McNeil, Trenton; granddaughters, Tonya (Alan) and Kesha; great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Josie; many siblings, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Verena (Hummer); several siblings. In honour of Joe’s wishes, his family extend an invitation to all to attend a celebration of his life, 1-4 p.m., Saturday, April 1, 2017 in the Air Force Club 110 Wing, Stellarton.
