Obituary of Thomas Whitman Strickland

LITTLE HARBOUR – Thomas Whitman ‘Whit’ Strickland, 69, Little Harbour, passed away suddenly, October 21, 2017, at home, in his place of peace. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Albert Whitman and Joyce (Frazer) Strickland. For the past 35 years he had been a leading contributor of the Nova Scotia aquaculture industry and the key innovator and developer of his salmon hatchery in Little Harbour. Whit was a supporter of the Little Harbour Community, passionate about living off the land, took great pride in his property including his blueberry fields and maintaining the woods natural beauty. He enjoyed the outdoors, whether hunting or fishing and especially enjoyed spending time with his five beautiful granddaughters. His quick wit was enjoyed by all and Whit will always be remembered for his love of life, great kindness and generosity shown to his family and friends. Surviving are wife, Brenda (Cahoon); son, Chris (Shelley), Little Harbour; daughter, Kelly (David) Jones, Fall River, grandchildren, Ashleigh, Bryden, Grace, Sienna and Stella; sisters, April (Daniel) Funnell, Calgary, Alta.; Kathleen (David) Flewwelling, Dartmouth; brothers, Leslie (Nancy), Abercrombie; Robin, Dartmouth; uncle, Al (Gloria) Frazer, Little Harbour; numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 26, 2017 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 27, 2017 with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Private family burial will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Whit’s memory to Little Harbour Community Centre or the Little Harbour Fire Department.
