MERIGOMISH – Norene Gertrude Smith, 83, Merigomish, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, November 29, 2021, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Gertrude (MacDonald) White. Following graduation from the former Normal College, Truro, she moved to Merigomish to teach in the one room schoolhouse, where she met her husband, Roy. She was Roy’s “right hand”, assisting in the Post Office and family store, ensuring everything ran smoothly, all the while maintaining a warm and loving home. In later years, she was employed with the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library, New Glasgow and volunteered at the Aberdeen Hospital Gift Shop. Norene was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher in earlier years. She was a quiet, reserved, patient lady, who loved her family dearly. Surviving are children, Glenn Smith, MacPhee’s Corner; Anne-Marie Smith (Dr. Carl Davis), Halifax; Brian Smith (Sarah Schuitema), Winterport, Maine; Erin Smith, Merigomish; grandchildren, Simon, Morgan, Ryan, Christopher Roy and Ariel; sister-in-law, Edith (Terry) Iceton, Toronto, Ont.; Janet Thompson, Toronto; brother-in-law, Harold (Marion) Smith, Halifax; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Roy Forbes Smith on November 25. The family will receive visitors 2-4 p.m. Friday, December 3 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 4 in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish with Rev. Gail Johnson Murdock officiating. Private interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Merigomish. Donations may be made in memory of Norene to Riverview Cemetery, Merigomish or St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish.
