Obituary of R. Bruce Miller

Robert Bruce Miller, MDCM, FRCPC NEW GLASGOW – It is with much sadness that the family announces the death of Robert Bruce Miller, MDCM, FRCPC, of New Glasgow. Bruce died peacefully at home in the early morning of June 11, 2009 on the day of his 60th wedding anniversary. Born in Campbellton, N.B. on October 8, 1922, he was the son of the late Thomas George and Ethel Ogilvie (Mair) Miller. Bruce lived a long and, as he always said, “A blessed life”. After receiving his MD from Dalhousie University in 1949, Bruce served the rural communities of Great Village and Pugwash before being accepted to the Montreal General Hospital for a specialization in Diagnostic Radiology. Moving to New Glasgow in 1958, he invested “heart and soul” into the Radiology Department at the Aberdeen Hospital. Demonstrating his commitment to the hospital as a whole, he dedicated his time and leadership skills as secretary and then as president of the Aberdeen Hospital’s medical staff. Throughout his three decades spent at the Aberdeen, he also was a member of virtually every committee at the hospital. A lifelong member of the Medical Society of Nova Scotia and the Pictou County Medical Society, Bruce also served as vice president and then president of the Nova Scotia Association of Radiologists for a term during the 1970’s. Balancing professional life with family and community, he has been a valued member of the Gyro Club since 1964 and was recently recognized for his 50 years of service as a tenor in the choir of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow. Bruce was a member of the Trinity United Church, New Glasgow and served on the Board of Stewards and the Mission and Service Committee. He particularly enjoyed his years singing with the New Glasgow Barbershop Chorus. He is survived by his wife, Nell (Dickson) Miller; sons, Tom (Lori), Greenhill; David (Amy), Toronto; daughter, Kathryn (Emil), Toronto; also deeply saddened by his passing are grandchildren, Matthew and Christy Miller, Greenhill; Sophie and Molly Sher, Toronto; sister, Ruth Keith, Riverview, N.B.; nephews, Dr. Doug Keith, Riverview; Bill (Lorraine) Bird, Tsawwassen, B.C.; Jim (Terry) Bird, Point Claire, Que. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Edith Bird; brothers-in-law, Harvey Bird and Merle Keith. The family will receive visitors 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Monday, June 15th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 16th in Trinity United Church with Rev. Jim Webber-Cook officiating. Reception to follow. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Bruce’s memory to theTrinity United Church Benevolent Fund or the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society. “Robert the Bruce” was a gentle gentleman who possessed a unique sense of humour.
