Obituary of Robert Earl Cummings

STELLARTON – Robert Earl Cummings, 83, Stellarton, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by his family. Born in the Brown Row, Stellarton, he was a son of the late David Joseph and Hilda (Fleming) Cummings. Robert began working at a young age in the Alan and McBain Mines. He enjoyed carpentry and spent the majority of his working life doing what he loved. Prior to retirement, Robert was employed with the Stellarton Department of Works. Each year, he eagerly awaited the beginning of fishing and hunting season; time that was shared with many cherished family and friends. Robert was a member of the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. He was a member of the 1948-49 Maritime Midget Championship and 1949-50 Maritime Juvenile Championship Lourdes hockey teams. Robert enjoyed being the catcher for many softball teams throughout the county. He leaves a legacy of hard work, fairness and devotion to family. Surviving are daughters, Linda Odo, New Glasgow; Teresa Cummings (Malcolm Menzies), Winston-Salem, N.C.; son, Robert Cummings, Port William; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Helen; granddaughter, Catherine Jane; grandson, Justin; sisters, Evelyn Fraser, Marie Taylor, Audrey MacDougall, Mary Rundle and Isabel Megeney; brothers, David, Bill, Willard, Edmund and twins in infancy. The family will receive visitors 2-4 p.m. Tuesday at 3 – 124 Belmont Street, Stellarton. Robert’s family wish to thank the Aberdeen Hospital ICU and Pictou County VON staff for the exceptional care that he received. Arrangements are entrusted to P. & K.
