Obituary of Emma Lee Stewart

NEW GLASGOW – Emma Lee (Boulter) Stewart, 53, New Glasgow, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by her family. Born in Pictou on November 13, 1957, she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Rebie (Gorrill) Boulter. Her father nurtured her love for music as a child, a passion which would remain with her for a lifetime. An active community volunteer, Emma had served on the Board of Directors of Tearman House, New Glasgow Dragon Boat Society, Breast Cancer Action Nova Scotia, and as chair of the New Glasgow Music Festival, and New Glasgow Jubilee. After her diagnosis with breast cancer in 2006, she founded the Reason for Hope Society to raise funds for cancer related initiatives. A talented performer, she was active in music, theatre and church. In 2007 she received two nominations from Music Nova Scotia including Inspirational Artist of the Year. Emma has been recognized by the town of New Glasgow, Music Nova Scotia, the East Coast Music Association and TIANS for her volunteer efforts. In July of this year Emma and her husband Jim were honored with the Communities in Bloom Flourish and Thrive Award. She was a long time employee of MacIntosh, MacDonnell & MacDonald Law Offices, New Glasgow and a member of Women Alike Abreast a River Dragon Boat Team. Active in her church community, she recently served as Contemporary Worship Coordinator at Trinity United Church, was a member of the choir and the group, Holy Potion. She is survived by her husband, James Stewart; daughter, Mary; son, Lee; brothers, John (Mary), Coldbrook; Lorne (Mary), Oromocto, N.B.; nieces, Jennifer, Kelly, and Shannon; nephew, Chris; numerous, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews; her Mac Mac & Mac “family”. She will be missed by her special pet, “Honey”. Special thanks to Dr. Gerry Farrell, the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit staff and Rev. Jim Webber-Cook. The family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10th and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, 536 Merigomish Road, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, September 12th in Trinity United Church, New Glasgow with Rev. Jim Webber-Cook presiding. At Emma’s request, donations may be made in her memory to the Reason for Hope Society or her family.
