Obituary of Harriette Joan Smith

LOWER BARNEY’S RIVER – Harriette Joan Smith, 78, Lower Barney’s River, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 31, 2013 in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 13, 1934 in Linacy, she was a daughter of the late Halver and Minnie “Blanche” (Crawford) Cameron. She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church and Ladies Guild, Merigomish. Joan enjoyed baking, reading and caring for animals. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Edward Lloyd Smith; daughter, Judith Smith, New Glasgow; sons, Sidney (Carol) Smith, Great Falls, Virginia; Barry (Cathy) Smith, Ardness; Paul (Cathy) Smith, New Glasgow; Roger (Sandra) Smith, LaHave; brother, Barry “Bunny” (Betty) Cameron, Merigomish; grandchildren, Jamie, Jay, Ryan, Sydney, Jennifer, Farrah, Craig, Matthew, Jeffrey, Cody, and Cameron; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; chosen daughter, Angela (Danny) LeBlanc; chosen grandchildren, Joey and Maria LeBlanc, and Amanda Langille; dear friend, Irene MacDonald. Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her sisters, Ivy Cameron in infancy and Bessie Atwater; brothers, Bill, Earl, Harris, Carl, Don and Lindy. The family will receive visitors 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4th and 12-12:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 5th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Interment will be in Murray's Point Cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made in Joan’s memory to the Pictou County SPCA or Aberdeen Health Foundation Palliative Care Unit Endowment.
