Obituary of Melvin Louis Scott
THORBURN – Melvin Louis “Mel” Scott, 81, Thorburn, passed away peacefully, November 4, 2020 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Sherbrooke, he was a son of the late Alfred Gordon and Frances Viola (Wheaton) Scott. Mel was employed with Irving Oil for many years, where he was affectionately known as “Scotty”. He was a 44-year member and a past master of Hudson Lodge No. 77 A.F. & A.M., Thorburn and a Past District Grand Chaplin of The Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia. Mel was a 35-year jewel holder and Past Nobel Grand of Moore Lodge No. 17, IOOF, Thorburn. Mel had many fond memories of coaching hockey at the Thorburn Rink and being a “roadie” for the Dunvegan Girls Pipe Band. He spent many enjoyable hours gardening and listening to his Irish/Scottish music. Mel exemplified the principles of Freemasonry, was a hardworking, kind and honourable gentleman who leaves a rich legacy of love.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Linda (Murley); daughter, Angela Scott (Steve Martin), Dartmouth; son, Christopher (Natasha) Scott, Thorburn; grandchildren, Ken Johnson and Mike Johnson, New Glasgow; Kaitlyn Scott and Riley Scott, Thorburn; brothers, Maurice Scott (Maureen Cutler), Kitchener, Ont.; Herbert (Alice) Scott, Stillwater; nieces and nephews, Dianne Scott, Jim (Lorraine) Scott, Debbie (Darrell) Peel, Jane (Lorne) Babcock, Cindy Scott, Fran Scott, Margaret Lamky, Janet (Gordon) Martin, Robert Scott, Shawn (Mary) Scott, Colleen Scott (Phil Samson), Suzanne Horne (Ron Williams), Steven (Holly) Murley and Janice Thompson (Mike Sicheri); sister-in-law, Grace (Gordon) Paris, New Lowell, Ont.; brothers-in-law, Warren (Sandra) Murley, Amherst; Bill (Betty) Chater, Woodbridge, Ont.; Lenord (Lillian) Chater, Brighton, Ont; numerous cousins, including, Scott (Sharon) Filian and Gregor (Eva) Hattie.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Robert and Harvey; sister-in-law, Leona Scott; nephew, Ken Scott.
In honour of Mel’s wishes, his family will celebrate his life privately.
