Obituary of Harold Weldon MacKenzie

NEW GLASGOW – Harold Weldon “Haddy” MacKenzie, 82, New Glasgow, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, in the presence of family. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Robert and Marjorie (Kelley) MacKenzie. Prior to retirement due to ill health, he had been employed with Sobey’s Distribution Centre, Stellarton and in earlier years had been employed with Connolly’s Ice Wagon. During the 1960’s, as “The Roamin’ Cowboy”, he hosted and performed on his Saturday night CKEC Radio broadcast and for several years hosted a program on K-Vision TV. Haddy greatly enjoyed performing and listening to County music. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame and a familiar presence at the Westside Sobey’s store. Surviving are daughters, Shirley (Mike) MacDonald, Mulgrave; Donna (Bob) Champion, New Glasgow; sons, James “Jim” (Christine), Stellarton; Weldon (Sonja), Edmonton; grandchildren, Diana, Jason, Michael, Andrea and Jessie; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Jayden, Bethany, Rebecca, Haley and Maylen; sister, Roberta MacNeil, New Glasgow; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Rita Mary (Hatchard); infant son, Clement Edward; brother-in-law, Art MacNeil. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1st in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow where funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2nd with Pastor Jerry Stearns officiating. Interment will be at a later date.
