Obituary of Edward Lloyd Smith

LOWER BARNEY’S RIVER – Edward Lloyd Smith, 88, Lower Barney’s River, passed away peacefully, in the embrace of his family, Saturday, February 27, 2016. Born in Lower Barney’s River, he was a son of the late Edward “Eddie” and Estella “Stella” (Mason) Smith. Lloyd was employed as a linesman and apprentice foreman/instructor with Nova Scotia Power for 35 years. He fished lobsters out of the Merigomish wharf for over 50 years. Lloyd was an energetic person who enjoyed working and life in general. He was a founding member of the Merigomish and District Volunteer Fire Department where he served for many years. Lloyd also served with Murray’s Point Cemetery committee and as Scout leader with the 1st Merigomish Boy Scout Troop. He enjoyed helping others and was always willing to lend a hand. Lloyd enjoyed the local dances, community events, spirited debate and sharing a laugh. He was devoted to his family, leaving a legacy of strength, honour and unending love. Surviving are daughter, Judith Mae “Judy” Smith, New Glasgow; chosen daughter, Angela (Danny) LeBlanc, New Glasgow; sons, Sidney “Sid” (Carol) Smith, Great Falls, Virginia; Barry (Cathy) Smith, Ardness; Paul (Cathy) Smith, New Glasgow; Roger (Sandra) Smith, LaHave; grandchildren, Ryan, Danielle, Jennifer (John), Farrah (Mike), Craig (Michelle), Jamie, Jay, Matthew (Caroline), Jeff (Chantal), Cody, Cameron, Joey and Maria; great-grandchildren, Leah, Madison, Makayla, Breanna, Camden, Emily, Olivia, Austen, Jake and Charlotte; sister-in-law, Roberta Smith, Prince Edward Island; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Joan (Cameron); sisters, Mae Forbes, Katherine Fulton and Shirley Jackson; brother, Jim “Fisher” Smith; brothers-in-law, Don Forbes, Russell Fulton and Gordon Jackson. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 2 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Interment will be in Murray’s Point Cemetery, Lower Barney’s River. Family flowers only.
