Obituary of Gertrude Isabel Ross
PIEDMONT – Gertrude Isabel (Dort) Ross, 84, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, formerly of High Crest Place, New Glasgow and Piedmont, passed away peacefully, Monday, February 6, 2012 in the manor, surrounded by her family.
Born in Halfway Cove, she was a daughter of the late Enos C. and Eliza E. (Ehler) Dort. She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish. During the Second World War, she had been employed with the former Steel Furnishings, New Glasgow, did food demos in the 60’s and 70’s with IGA and for many years she was considered the community hairdresser in Piedmont. Gertrude and her late husband, Winnie, were well-known for their love of dancing and their grace on the dance floor. She had amazing ability to “whip up” a pan of biscuits, was a caregiver to many and was gifted with characteristics which made her a loyal and true friend. But her life’s focus was her family. Gertrude was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt.
Surviving are her daughters, Marjorie Cameron, Thorburn; Janice Williams, Barney’s River; Cathy Cameron, Garden of Eden; sons, Jack (Anita) Ross, Greenhill; Bill Ross, Piedmont; grandchildren, Robin Cameron, Jason (Richelle) Ross, Nicole (Clarence) Fraser, Steven (Haleigh) Ross, Kristy (Ian) MacNeil, Jeremy, Jan, Katlyn and Adam Cameron; great-grandchildren, Madison Fraser, Copeland Ross, Cohen Ross and Colby MacNeil; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Winthrop Copeland Ross (1994); sisters, Harriett Cameron, Lila Cameron and Elizabeth Ryter; son-in-laws, Blair Cameron and Gary Williams.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where her funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11th in the chapel with Dr. Rev. Glen Matheson officiating, assisted by Rev. Gail Johnson-Murdock. Interment will be in Piedmont Cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Gertrude's memory to Piedmont Cemetery or any charity of choice.
