To Doreen's children and Family: So sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. Doreen was great friend to me when I moved to the Valley my last year of high school. She took me under her wing! She knew I also loved to dance and when we went to dances in Kentville would always made sure I had a drive home. I visited with her in New Glasgow, but you were only toddlers at the time. The last time I saw her was at MicMac Mall a few years ago and had a great chat. She was so proud of her children and was a great person. May she rest in peace.

To All of Doreen's Family: I have known Doreen since the 1950's. She introduced me to the Halifax City Life! What an awesome lady. Over the years our paths went in different directions (but we continued to stay connected). I have retired and recently accepted a position with the AUBA. I was looking forward to making a stronger connection with her in my capacity as the Office Assistant for the African United Baptist Association where she took on many major roles in her service to our God and Saviour. Although I was unable to attend her Celebration of Life, my mind and spirit was with all of you during this time and will continue to keep you up in prayer.

So shocked and saddened to learn of the recent passing of my long time friend Doreen, after a tireless life of "giving", whether it be to her Church, Second Baptist United; her New Glasgow community; or her dedication to improving the rights of all people, and in particular, women; her interest in the latter possibly stemming from her close association years ago with the late Muriel Duckworth, another dedicated community activist for human rights. Doreen and I were roommates when I first came to Halifax in 1965. Along with some other young ladies, we roomed with a Mrs. Smith (affectionately known as Nan) on Creighton Street in Halifax. We all became known as 'Nan's Girls" in the community and were proud of this distinctive title. We girls shared many happy moments at Nan's and Doreen was always a part of the good times and fond memories from those years. To this day, Doreen remained one of my Facebook friends. I regret we will be unable to attend her going home journey tomorrow due to the inclement weather that is being forecast. But our thoughts and prayers will be with all of the family members, in particular Jeff and Gail and their families. You have our deepest sympathy. May your Mom rest from her labours in eternal peace.

I met Doreen when I came to work at St FX Extension in 1980, "from away" and very green. She supported and mentored me, then and always. When I moved on to other jobs, I found excuses to see her and work at community development with her whenever I could. She was amazing--her tireless work for justice, her ability to see how all issues connect, her wonderful sense of humour. Not to mention her fail-proof pie crust recipe; I think of her every time I make a pie. Gail and Jeffrey, we haven't met, but I heard about you every time I saw Doreen. She was so proud of you! Gail & Jeff, My condolences to you and your families. My heart broke when I heard about your dear Mother Doreen’s passing. Doreen gave so much of herself and time to others in her community, one will never know the true impact she has had, as I am sure it is endless. The work she did was so important and empowering to those who needed a listening ear, a smile that showed someone cared, and a look to let them know I see you…that is what your mother did for me, she empowered me. You know God always places people in our paths for reasons, and growing up next door to your family, I believe was divine intervention, as your mother gave me so much strength. Doreen always showed me so much compassion and kindness when others did not understand my shyness. I always felt safe when I was in her presence. I respected your mother dearly. Doreen was a true pillar in our community, and will truly be missed. Praying God strengthens you all through this time. Blessings and Love

Her warmth, sense of humor and kindness were the qualities that initially drew me to her as a young woman starting a social advocacy career. It was however, her determination, and her tireless commitment to social change that made me look for her at every conference and women's gathering I attended so I could learn from her and simply be in her presence. The year was 1992 and it was my first meeting as a council member on the NS Advisory Council of the Statue of Women. Several of us were new that day. I walked in and sat down at the Council table beside this interesting looking woman. Before saying hello, I leaned over and said," Well you've got good taste". She scowled at me as if I was being too fresh until I pointed to our outfits. Our new fancy suits were a somewhat different design, but exactly the same colourful print. She affectionately patted my arm and said, "Oh, are we going to be good friends." And we were. Yesterday, this dear wonderful, wonderful woman, Doreen Paris, passed. Doreen, was a fierce advocate for social justice. She worked tirelessly and even when others would avoid the issue she'd plow forward. She was fearless in her work against racism and equality. One could write a book about her volunteer work and her love of others and community. She was sincerely religious and walked the walk and talked the talk. As sarcastic as she was gentle of soul. Ready with a good laugh and supportive during a few tears. If she was your friend you knew she always had your back, without hesitation, without question. My heart goes out to her family. I shall deeply miss her guidance and love, but am blessed to have been her friend.

I am sending condolences to all of Doreen’s immediate and extended family. The world lost a beautiful person . There are no words that could be said to make this any easier . I hope that you all find comfort in the time and memories you had to share with Doreen . She brought so much hope , love and kindness to everyone she came into contact with including myself . Over the last 12 years , we went from acquaintances to friends and I will always be grateful for that. She always kept me on the right track and gave me tough love when I needed it . She always gave me strength when I had none to give to myself . She was an extraordinary women who will never be forgotten . I had a lovely visit with her just before Christmas and that time will always be cherished . I am so blessed to have a piece of her love . She will forever be in my heart . Prayers are sent to all of you .
