Obituary of Elizabeth Victoria MacNaughton
NEW GLASGOW - Elizabeth Victoria “Betty” MacNaughton, 94, Valley View Villa, Riverton, formerly of New Glasgow passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord on Friday, March 25, 2011, in the Villa.
Born in Halifax on August 20, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Nettie (Jollimore) Smeltzer. Betty was a hairdresser in Halifax before moving to New Glasgow in 1948. She was employed as a medical assistant for Dr. G. R. Douglas, New Glasgow for 32 years. Betty was an active member of St. George’s Anglican Church, New Glasgow, the ACW, the Choir and the Altar Guild. She was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 34, New Glasgow where she served as organist for many years. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Pictou County Help Line and was the founder of Good Tern Campers. Betty volunteered with numerous charities and organizations. She will be remembered for her musical talent as a member of Music Men, which later became Betty & Friends, providing countless hours of entertainment throughout Pictou County. Above all else, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Surviving are her only daughter, Sandra (Chet) Fleming; grandchildren, Darla (Bill) Reive, Trevor (Angela), Shawn (Kim), Jeff (Lisa); great-grandchildren, Evan and Sophie Fleming; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Alexander MacNaughton; sisters, Caroline Publicover and Delita Murray; brothers, Harry, Judson, Roland and Arthur Smeltzer.
Thank you to Betty’s friend and roommate, Thelma and her daughter, Jay, for their companionship. Thank you to the Valley View Villa first floor nursing and housekeeping staff for their special TLC. Special thank you to Joan MacGee, Linda Gunton, Betty MacDonald, who were Betty’s faithful caregivers before she became a resident of Valley View Villa in 2006.
The family will receive visitors 12 – 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, Marcn 29th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
