Obituary of Robert "Bob" Clifford Fraser

FRASER, Robert Clifford “RC” “Bob”, FCA, 80, Halifax, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2010 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Halifax. Beloved father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Bob was born in Island East River, Pictou County, to Robert Clifford and Jessie Marjorie (Campbell) Fraser. He graduated from New Glasgow High School in 1946 and enjoyed his role, over the years, as life president of his graduating class. In 1952, he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Dalhousie University. Following graduation, he worked with the Montreal Board of Trade for three years before joining the firm now known as Deloitte. At this same time, Bob took courses at McGill University that led to his CA designation in 1958. The following year, he returned to Pictou County as Superintendent of the Power Utility. In 1963, Bob was transferred to Nova Scotia Power (NSP) in Halifax, as assistant to the General Manager. In 1965, he became secretary/treasurer of NSP, after which, in 1976, he was appointed Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Nova Scotia Power, where he remained until he retired in 1987. Bob’s contributions extended into the community and throughout the years he volunteered much of his time to a variety of organizations. He served as chair of the general division of the Canadian Electrical Association; was past president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia from which he held the FCA designation. He was a founding member and past president of the Atlantic Provinces chapter of the Financial Executives Institute as well as a past president of the Halifax Assistance Fund and the Nova Scotia Branch of the Canadian Bible Society. As well, he served 10 years as member of the national executive of the Canadian Bible Society. Bob served for many years as an elder at Calvin Presbyterian Church, Halifax, where he worked on numerous volunteer projects. Always proud of his Pictou County roots, Bob served as Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee for the Camp Geddie expansion in the late 1980’s. He recently established the R.C. Fraser Family Scholarship for the benefit of first year Commerce students attending Dalhousie University, with preference given to high school graduates from Pictou County. In 1992, the commemorative medal for the 125th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada was conferred on Bob by the Governor General of Canada, “in recognition of significant contribution to compatriots, community, and to Canada”. Bob cherished his family, faith, wide circle of friends and Scottish Heritage. A loving father, he nourished, protected and prepared his children for life. A beloved “grampy”, he loved his grandchildren and great grandchild, and treasured the special relationship he had formed with each one. Throughout the years, Bob taught love and compassion through example and enriched the lives of all with whom he came in contact. Bob will be remembered for his wisdom and unwavering support and generosity to all. His positive spirit, insightfulness, and zest for life will be deeply missed. Surviving are his daughter, Jane (Kent) Williams, New Glasgow; son, Allan (Anne-Marie) Fraser, Bedford; grandchildren, Amanda, Kristen, and Rebecca Williams; Brittany, Jillian, and Andrew Fraser; great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Williams; sisters, Jean (Raymond) Cassidy, New Glasgow; Judy (Rev.
