Obituary of Ivi Aleksandra Kont
NEW GLASGOW - lvi Aleksandra (Kalam) (Maelde) Kont, 94, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 3, 2010 in the Manor.
Born January 17, 1916 in Parnu, Estonia, she was a daughter of the late August Kalam of Parnu and Elisavetta Roots of Audru Kula. As a teen-ager she was employed at the Kage Coffee House in Parnu. After graduation she was employed as a cook’s helper on the Estonian freighter Laine/Kajak sailing out of Tallin. This brief career ended in 1934 when the ship sank during a Baltic storm. lvi went back to Tallin where she met Evald and a year later they were married at the Jaani Luteri Kirik. They had three children prior to the outbreak of the Second World War in Estonia. In 1939 tragedy struck when her daughter Aime died and in early 1944, when Evald was killed in the war. Tired of war, she immigrated with her sons and younger sister, Leonida to Poland in September 1944, and from there to Germany. Ivi’s strength and devotion to her family came to the forefront as the family suffered during the later stages of the war and harsh winter. She met her second husband, Jaan “Papa” Kont in Scwartzenbek and they were later married in Oldenburg, Germany. In the fall of 1949, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Pictou County, where lvi made her home and final resting place. lvi was gainfully employed in the New Glasgow area, retiring from the Heather Motel in 1983. She always spoke highly of her fellow employees. lvi was a devoted person of faith and a member of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow and ladies groups. She was an active member of the New Canadian Club. lvi exemplified a life filled with devotion and service to her family and friends. She always taught the true meaning of service, faith and integrity. Ivi was a devoted wife, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Ivi was the last surviving member of her family.
Surviving are her son, Peep (Joan) Maelde, Fredericton Junction, N.B.; grandson, Guido (Penny) Maelde and children, Emma and Anna; grand-daughter, Corina (Paul) Schanoski and children, Nathen, Savana and Kaleb , Moose Jaw, Sask.; grandson, Steven (Magdalini) Maelde and children, Angelina and Sebastian, Bolton, Ont.; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her beloved first husband, Evald Maelde; second, beloved husband, Jaan “Papa” Kont; daughter, Aime Maelde; son, Mati Maelde and his wife, Yvonne; sisters, Marie Pollu, Leonida Kask and Lidia Kalam; brothers, Feodor and Paul Kalam.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Thursday, August 5th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, August 6th in Trinity United Church with Rev. Dr. Jim Shaffner officiating. Interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
