Obituary of Leon Irving Sutherland
ROSSFIELD – Leon Irving “The Lion” Sutherland, 63, Rossfield, died Monday, January 23, 2017 in the Aberdeen Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Smith Irving and Mary Christena (MacLeod) Sutherland. Upon completion of grade 9 at East Pictou Junior High School, he enrolled at Dartmouth Regional Vocational School, completing a course in cooking. Upon graduation, he spent a brief time employed as a cook. In 1973 Leon began working at the former Trenton Works, leaving upon its closure. He worked in various capacities, but was most proud of his years spent in the forges, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. Leon was thankful for having lived his life on the family farm in Rossfield and all that it entailed. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing the bounty of the harvest. Leon enjoyed spending time with his buddies and was grateful for their friendship. Above all, he enjoyed sharing life with his wife, Anna and doing those things that mattered most, especially, listening to music and dancing.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Sutherland; daughter, Chantal Sutherland (Jon); son, Nathan (Joelene) Sutherland and their children, Leon and Jazmin; sister, Reeta Sweeney; brother, Billy (Ginette) Sutherland; uncle, Duncan Greene; cousins, Kathy Walker and David (Lynn) Greene; sisters-in-law, Florence Sutherland and Joyce (Ross) Evans; brother-in-law, Mike McGee; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Donald Sutherland; aunt, Nellie Greene; sister-in-law, Peg McGee; brother-in-law, Reg Sweeney.
In keeping with Leon’s wishes his life will be honoured privately.
Donations may be made in Leon’s memory to Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
