Obituary of Adrian Hendrickus Verhagen
BAILEY’S BROOK – Adrian Hendrikus Verhagen Sr., 92, Bailey’s Brook, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Gemonde, Holland on August 5, 1916, he was the son of the late Marinus and Petronella (Voeta) Verhagen. He immigrated to Canada on May 12, 1953 with his wife, Johanna and children, Marinus, Anne and John. He was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Lismore. He worked with his wife on the family farm for many years. He was also employed in construction and lumbering. Adrian enjoyed gardening, horses and telling stories. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving are his daughter, Anne (Jim) McNeil, Lower Barney’s River; sons, Marinus (Dorothy) Verhagen, Linacy; John Verhagen, Adrian (Jocelyn) Verhagen Jr., Bailey’s Brook; grandchildren, Darcin, Johanna, Jacob, Jimmy, Johannus, Julie, Rosie, Andrew and Adrian III; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jena, Kyle, Brianna, Tyana, Teague, Dylan and Nathanial.
He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Johanna Cornelia Van Biggelaar; sons, Peter Joseph Verhagen and Andrew in infancy; two sisters.
Visitation will be 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Colin MacKinnon presiding. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
