Obituary of Elizabeth Florence Phillips

NEW GLASGOW – Elizabeth Florence “Betty” Phillips, 89, Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the home, surrounded by her family. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Florence Grace (Thomas-Clancy) Woods. Raised in Halifax, she graduated from Halifax Academy at the age of 17 and attended the Nova Scotia Art College. She was employed with the Bank of Nova Scotia, Halifax for a number of years before moving to St. John’s, Nfld. to work in the Purchasing Department at Fort Pepperall during the Second World War. In 1946 she moved with her family to Montreal where she was employed with the Schering Corporation. In 1949 she moved back to Halifax and married the late Judge Welsford G. Phillips where they resided for a number of years prior to moving to New Glasgow. After her family was grown, she was employed with PICORD for a number of years until retirement. Betty served as a Brownie/Guide Leader and as founding Board Member of the YMCA, New Glasgow. She enjoyed painting, pottery and sewing. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Surviving are her children, Doug (Verna) Burgess, New Glasgow; Dr. Peter (Stephanie) Phillips, Collingwood, Ont.; Janel Gero, New Glasgow; honorary daughter, Debbie Barron, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Gregory (Cathy Ashley) Burgess, Ontario; Kenny Burgess (Lisa MacDonald) and his son, Kaine, Pictou Landing; Angela (Gerard) Burke and daughters, Eden, Erin and Erica, Middleton; Mark (Jennifer) Phillips, Brampton, Ont.; a niece and two nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Judge Welsford G. Phillips; son-in-law, Norman Gero. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 17th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow where funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18th in the chapel with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made in Betty’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Canadian National Institute for the Blind or any charity of choice.
