Obituary of Doris Gertrude Carter

PHILLIP’S HARBOUR - Doris Gertrude (Furby), Carter, 96, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, formerly of Phillip’s Harbour and South Tottenham, England, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord, Tuesday, February 21, 2012 in the Manor. Born August 1, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Edwin and Emma (Garwood) Furby. The youngest of five children, she was the last surviving member of her family. Upon completion of her education, she worked as a forelady for the Dunlop Rubber factory, England. Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, the factory was retooled to manufacture munitions. During the Blitz, Doris served her country by removing undetonated bombs from London rooftops. While strolling through Hyde Park with friends in 1946, Doris met and was smitten by a young Canadian soldier, John J. Carter, who would become her husband. In Christmas of the same year, Doris sailed to Canada as a young war-bride to be, marrying John the following month in 1947. They built a home in Phillips Harbour raising three children. Even though times were often tough, necessity gave rise to Doris’ creative ingenuity. She was a faithful member of Christ Church Anglican, Queensport. Doris enjoyed baking, knitting, doing the lexicons and word search puzzles. “The Harbour” was Doris’s beloved home for 63 years until ill health required her to leave in early 2011, with the distinction of being the oldest resident. A lady of great strength, perseverance and faith, Doris was a loving wife, cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, who embraced life with a smile. Surviving are her son, Gary (Dagmar) Carter, Pictou; daughters, Sharon (Peter) DeGroot, Middle Stewiacke; Valerie Carter, Londonderry; grandchildren, Jenny Carter, Hillside; Jacob Carter, Kingston; Ont.; Michael (Karen) DeGroot, Middle Stewiacke; Crista (Randy) Ellis, Upper Stewiacke; Risha-Jaide Rushton, Saskatoon, Sask; great-grandchildren, Cameron DeGroot, Middle Stewiacke; Dillon and Andrew Ellis, Upper Stewiacke; sisters-in-law Vera (Clifford) Wasson, Truro; Myra Carter, Isaac’s Harbour; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John (2004); son-in-law, Richard Rushton; granddaughter, Angela Carter; sister, Daisy in infancy; brothers, Charles, Walter, George and Edward. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17th in Christ Church Anglican, Queensport with Rev. Darroch Fagan officiating, assisted by Rev. Tory Byrne. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow in Days Gone By Restaurant, Guysborough. Donations may be made in Doris’ memory to a charity of your choice. The Carter family wish to extend their sincere appreciation to Jerry and Karen Creamer, Clarence and Bernadette Creamer, Mary Scranton and Mabel Hendsbee for the love and support given to Doris over the years. Thank you to Dr. Foley, the Guysborough County Continuing Care home support staff, Drs. Forbes and Farrell and the first floor and lower infirmary staff of Glen Haven Manor for the excellent care given to our “mum”. “When you look to the heavens, don’t think of them as stars, Think of them as porch lights welcoming our Mum home.”
