Obituary of Michael Garnet Long
NEW GLASGOW – Michael Garnet “Mike” Long, 61, New Glasgow, passed away, Wednesday, December 26, 2012 in the Palliative Care Unit of Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by his family.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Garnet Francis and Constance Dorothy May “Connie” (Martin) Long. He was employed as Safety Officer with Pyramid, CNRL Refinery, Northern Alberta. Previously, he had been employed as a Welding Inspector, Quality Assurance Department of the former Trenton Works. In younger years, Mike worked in the construction industry in western Canada for many years, returning with his family to reside in New Glasgow. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, hunting and camping. He travelled extensively with his family throughout North America, England and India. Mike was a skilled handyman, not afraid to tackle any task, big or small. He enjoyed renovating the family home with his wife, Sandra and helping others with their projects. Mike was happiest when tinkering in his “man cave”, repairing, painting and building, while enjoying the company of family and friends.
Surviving are his wife and best friend of 32 years, Sandra A. (Graham); daughter, Stephanie (Jason) Stewart, Amherst; granddaughter, Lauren Grace Stewart; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, David; a sister in infancy.
The family will receive visitors 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29 at the family home, 217 Grant Street, New Glasgow with interment to follow at 3:30 p.m. in Holy Cross Cemetery, New Glasgow with Rev. Charles McPherson presiding.
