Obituary of Claude Doane Bent
LITTLE HARBOUR – C. Doane Bent, 89, Little Harbour, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2010 in the Northumberland Veterans Unit, Pictou.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Harold Ullathorne and Beatrice Ethel (Boutillier) Bent. He attended New Glasgow High School and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. Serving four years overseas as an Air Control Officer with the European Theatre of Operation, he was stationed first in Britain, later landed on Juno Beach, Normandy and then proceeded through to Holland. Upon return from overseas, he met his late wife, Shirley Young and was married on August 4, 1951. He was a commercial traveller for many years. He was a faithful, lifelong member of St. George’s Anglican Church, New Glasgow, where he served on parish council and as warden of the parish. Doane was a member of the Gyro’s Club, Kinsmen Club, Air Force Association of Canada, The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 34, New Glasgow, the Normandy Veterans Association and the United Commercial Travellers, Pictonian Council 879, New Glasgow. Doane remained active for many years through various interests that included carpentry (constructing three boats), weather forecasting, music, photography and gardening. He greatly enjoyed boating and fishing on the open water. His family best knew his admirable qualities; a loving and devoted husband, adoring and supportive father, proud grandfather, wise brother, gracious uncle and a gentleman to his friends.
He will be sadly missed by daughters, Jan (Allan) Keefe, North Vancouver, B.C.; Deborah (Terry) Siddall, Black Point; granddaughters, Jessica Keefe and Kaitlyn Siddall; nieces, grand-nieces, nephews, grand-nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Shirley; brother, Gerald; sister, Betty Ley.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 3rd in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 4th in St. George’s Anglican Church, the Rev. M. Elliott Siteman presiding. Private interment will be held in Church Brook Cemetery, Little Harbour at a later date.
