Obituary of Barbara Van Den Bos

STELLARTON - Barbara (Kendrick) Van Den Bos, 82, Stellarton died Friday, June 28, 2013 surrounded by loved ones in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Nottingham, England in 1931, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Evelyn (Underwood) Kendrick. Barbara and her husband, Arie, came to Canada in 1968, and for many years made their home in Springville, Pictou County. Prior to immigration to Canada, Barbara resided in Staines, England, and was employed as secretary to a number of doctors, and then Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Linoleum Company, which had been established in Staines by the inventor of linoleum, Frederick Walton. In Canada, Barbara worked in the mental health department of the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, retiring after twenty-seven years of service. Her love of travel enabled her to visit many of her pen pals and 5W friends around the world. She was a former member of Springville Presbyterian Church, the New Glasgow Gardening Club and the ladies auxiliary of the East River Valley Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are her husband Arie, Valley View Villa, Riverton; sister, Valerie, Staines; family members, Joan Underwood, New Glasgow; Simon Underwood, Sylvester; Jane (Vida) Underwood, Cook’s Brook; Jay (Kathy) Underwood, Elmsdale; Frank and Debbi Sobey, long known as “instant son and daughter-in-law”, Kings Head; Sara (Craig Dodge) Underwood, Stratford, P.E.I.; Mary Richards and Anne Watts, England; and members of Arie’s family in Australia, Germany and The Netherlands. Besides her parents, she was pre-deceased by several cousins and most recently by her dear cousin, Peter Underwood. There will be no visitation at Barbara’s request. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 3, in Springville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Susan Smith officiating. Private interment will take place in Springville Cemetery with a reception to follow in the church hall. Donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to the Pictou County SPCA or Aberdeen Health Foundation Palliative Care Unit Endowment. (Please click to donate online.) Special gratitude is extended to Dr. Gerry Farrell and the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care team for “doing the work of angels”.
