Obituary of Howard Albert MacMillan

NEW GLASGOW – Howard Albert MacMillan, 100, New Glasgow, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2012 in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow. Born on January 24, 1912, he was raised on Maple Leaf Farm, Woodfield, a son of the late Roger and Margaret Jane (Campbell) MacMillan. In earlier years, he taught school in Woodfield and Moose River. During the Great Depression, Howard was employed as a store clerk in Tatamagouche, Blue Mountain and New Glasgow, where he learned and practiced the art of sign making. Retiring in 1980, he had been a store keeper and shipper with Maritime Steel and Foundries Limited, New Glasgow for 39 years. Howard was baptized in Knox Presbyterian Church, Blue Mountain and upon moving to New Glasgow in the late 1930’s became a faithful supporter of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow where he served as an elder, choir member, Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He had an appreciation for music, sang in several male choirs and enjoyed playing the fiddle. Howard was a life-long learner who cherished reading and writing. He was blessed with the ability to recall events spanning a century, which he willingly shared with family and friends. Surviving are his daughter, Janet (William) Jardine, Lower Sackville; sons, Boyd, New Glasgow; Bayne (Heather), Sackville, N.B.; Ian, New Glasgow; sister, Alice McMillan, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Carolyn (John) and Eleanor; great-grandchildren, Sophie and Jarrod; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Ruth MacInnis, Halifax. He was predeceased by his wife, Harriet Frances (Stalker); brother, Stanley MacMillan; daughter-in-law, Darlene MacMillan; sister-in-law, Marion Marshall; brother-in-law, John H. McMillan. The family will receive visitors 2-4 p.m. Saturday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. J. Kenneth MacLeod officiating. Interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Howard’s memory to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Building Fund or any charity of choice.
