Obituary of Laura Elizabeth MacLean
NEW GLASGOW - Laura Elizabeth MacLean, 93, Valley View Villa, Riverton, formerly of New Glasgow, died Saturday, January 14, 2017 in the Villa.
Born in Margaree, she was a daughter of the late John Murdock and Mary Ann (McDaniel) Ross. At seventeen she traveled to New Glasgow, finding employment at the Trenton Munitions factory. In later years Laura had been employed as a sales clerk and cashier working at the Save Easy on Little Harbour Road during it's entire operation. Prior to retirement she had been a housekeeper for Father Bobby Day and Father Bill Rankin. Laura was an active member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was a life member of the Catholic Women’s League where she held a number of positions on the Executive.
Laura was a devoted mom, grandmother and friend, a comforting source of wisdom and compassion, whose kitchen was always a welcoming refuge. She enjoyed spending time playing cards with her neighbourhood friends and dancing, especially with the former Trenton Twirlers dance club. Laura, an “outdoors gal”, enjoyed gardening, long walks, skating and cross country skiing. She was a lady who deeply loved and cared for her family and friends, by whom, she will be dearly missed. For Laura, who lived her life by faith, life has now only changed, not ended.
Surviving are daughters, Mary (Del) Murray, Kings Head; Georgina Moore, Victoria, B.C.; Ann MacLean (Dr. Peter Lee), Kings Head; Jane (Dennis) McGee, Big Island; son, Ross MacLean, Falmouth; grandchildren, Jace (Norma), Chris (Erin), Laura (Neil), Jacob (Nicola), Amber (Bill), Nathan (Trish), Sage, William (Nicole) and John A.; great-grandchildren, Valerie, Attlee, Olin and Zander; sisters-in-law, Kaye Ross, Vancouver, B.C.; Cub Ross, West Covina, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Angus MacLean; son, Gordie MacLean; granddaughter, Aaron McGee; daughter-in-law, Laurie Weise; son-in-law, Scott Moore; sister, Armenia Campbell; brothers, Henry and William Ross; brother-in-law, Fred Campbell.
The family will receive visitors 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31.17 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1.17 in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church with Father Thomas MacNeil presiding. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date.
Laura’s family extend their appreciation and gratitude to the kitchen and second floor staff of Valley View Villa for the care and many kindnesses shown her over the past five years.
