Obituary of John Elliot Porter

MASSTOWN - John Elliot Porter, 82, Masstown, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 24, 2011 at the Colchester Regional Hospital from a short battle with cancer. John was born in Masstown on January 29, 1928 and was the fourth child of the late George and Mary (Putnam) Porter. He is survived by his two sons, Matthew (Nicole), Debert, James (Angela), Masstown and daughter Mary (Marc) Bertoncini, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He is survived by two sisters, Francis Pash, Joyce (Don) Goodspeed, brother Donald (Helen) Porter, sister-in-law Dawn Porter, sister-in-law Jean (Phil) McNutt, brother-in-law Donald (Jane) McCarthy, Edmonton, six grandchildren, Coleman and Weston Porter, Hannah and Haylee Porter and Kayla and Danielle Bertoncini, several nieces, nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by his wife Vivian, daughter Dorothy, brother Arthur, half brother Jack Vaughn, sister Dorothy, brother-in-laws Ernie Pash, Glen Rice, mother and father-in-law Jim and Louise McCarthy.. John was a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed the outdoors especially snowmobiling and four wheeling and many drives in his car every day. During his school years he attended the School for the Deaf in Halifax where he made many lifetime friends. He continued his education completing an auto-body course in PEI. He started his career at Goodspeeds/Brett Motors, finally retiring from Pyes Chevrolet in 1992. John will be forever missed by family and friends. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm. on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the Masstown United Church, Masstown, NS with Reverend Don MacQueen officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Folly Village Cemetery, Glenholme, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eastern Canadian Association of the Deaf, Masstown United Church or charity of your choice.
