Obituary of Sheldon Stevens Smith

HILLSIDE – Sheldon Stevens “Shelly” Smith, 75, Hillside, passed away Saturday, October 12, 2013 in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow, surrounded by his family. Born in South Lochaber, he was a son of the late Lewis “Lew” Smith and Love Edna (Malloy) (Smith) MacEwan. Prior to retirement, he had been employed with the former J.W. MacDonald Company, Thorburn. He was a member of the former St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Trenton. Music was an important part of Shelly’s life. In earlier years, he and his late wife, Linda, were co-lead singers with the County Rock band, “The Hillsiders”. He and Linda shared many wonderful memories hosting and attending kitchen parties. For over 25 years, he and Linda spent every camping season at D & B Campground and greatly enjoyed the company of the friends they had gained. His D & B family brought him much comfort since the passing of Linda two years ago. Shelly was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. Surviving are daughters, Tracy (Darren) Blackadar, Hillside; Tanya (Craig) Wilson, Hillside; grandchildren, Kevin, Ryan, Alicia, Emma and Benjamin; great-granddaughter, Deirdre; sisters, Edna (Ross) Martin, Trenton; Margaret “Dokie” (Phillip) Stewart, Thorburn; Patricia “Whitie” McKinnon, MacLellan’s Brook; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Marilyn “Chickie” MacCuish, Tina Mercanti and Betty MacEwan; brother, Lewis "Lewie" Smith; sister-in-law, Greta “Diddles” Smith; step-father, Murdock MacEwan. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson presiding. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery. Donations may be made in Shelly’s memory to Aberdeen Health Foundation Palliative Care Unit Endowment.
