Obituary of Grace Viola Douglas

NEW GLASGOW – Grace Viola Douglas, 88, New Glasgow, passed away Friday, January 28, 2011 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by her family. Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late William Howard and Laura May Isabel (Collins) Sheppard. During the Second World War, she worked at the Halifax dockyards. She was proud to have been employed with several restaurants in Halifax and to have served many families in Halifax and Pictou County. She was a senior member of Second United Baptist Church, New Glasgow, the Ladies Auxiliary, Bertha Myers Missionary Society and the Social Committee. Grace had served as a Sunday school teacher, in Christian Education, the Baptist Young People’s Union, as a Girl Guide leader and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the former African United Baptist Association Symposium Choir and was honoured to have sung for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. She had been a secretary with the former Pursuers Society, New Glasgow, a 31-year member of St. John Ambulance, Pictou County and a lifetime member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 34, Ladies Auxiliary, New Glasgow. Grace was very supportive of young people and enjoyed their company. She enjoyed visiting sister churches in the African United Baptist Association and attending various Christian churches. She, like her late mother, was very hospitable, all were welcome in her home and provided with a generous lunch. Grace was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her daughters, Priscilla Ewoye (Mark Oates), New Glasgow; Beatrice (Raymond) Douglas-Simmons, Halifax; sons, James (Rocklyn Dorrington) Sheppard, New Glasgow; Henry Sheppard (Cheryl Hopkins), Toronto; Anthony “Tony” Sheppard (Wendy Campbell), New Glasgow; grandchildren, Shauna, Damon, Moraig, Courtney, James, James Thomas, Sajai; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Shamika, Shamar, Jalen, Nevaeh Grace and Tayte; sisters-in-law, May Sheppard, Halifax; Nellie Jones, Maureen Sheppard, Montreal; Patricia Sheppard, Winnipeg, Man.; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Charles Douglas; sisters, Edith Boggs, Catherine Clark, Clara Marquis, Bess Orlowski; brothers, William A., Frederick, James, Joseph, Francis and Robert. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1st in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2nd in Second United Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Morley Shaw officiating. Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery at a later date.
