Obituary of Margaret Elizabeth Chisholm

NEW GLASGOW – Margaret Elizabeth Chisholm, 82, New Glasgow, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2009 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Kenzieville, on October 22, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Edwin and Elizabeth Catherine (Wilkinson) Robertson. She graduated from the Marvel Hair Dressing School, Toronto in 1947 and was first employed with the former Porter’s Beauty Parlor, New Glasgow. She was an elder and choir member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow; a member of the Allan Pollok A.M.S and the Ladies Guild. Margaret was a Past Nobel Grand and 63 year member of Golden Link Rebekah Lodge No. 2 and financial secretary for over 40 years, District Deputy President, President of District No. 9 and No. 10 Association and Decoration of Chivalry Jewel recipient; Past Worthy Matron of Century Chapter No. 10, Order of the Eastern Star, New Glasgow and was Grand Representative of South Carolina; Past Regent of Dr. Caroline Carmichael Chapter IODE, New Glasgow; Past Chief of Murray Temple No. 4, Pythian Sisters, Westville. She was a honorary life member of the Canadian Cancer Society, Pictou East Unit and the PC Women’s Association. She was a member of the Aberdeen Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, 55 Plus Club, the Pictou County Ukelele Group, Royal Canadian Legion Choir, the former Singers of Praise and the Housewives Bowling League. Margaret was a tireless canvasser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia; Canadian Cancer Society and the Kidney Foundation of Canada. She was named provincial and local “Volunteer of the Year” numerous times. Margie was a selfless and caring person, who joyfully shared her life with others. She enjoyed music and never missed an opportunity to dance. She will be deeply missed by daughters, Betty Murphy, New Glasgow; Cheryl (Ed) Weir, Stillwater; grandchildren, Derek (Stephanie) Weir, Beechville; Ryan Murphy, New Glasgow; great-grandsons, Owen and Connor Weir; aunt, Middy Wilkinson, Broadway; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin Chisholm; grandson, David Weir; brothers, Daniel and Bill Robertson. The family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. Saturday, October 3rd and 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Sunday, October 4th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, October 5th in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow with Rev. Richard Sand officiating. Interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Century Chapter No. 10, OES service will be 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Murray Temple No. 4, Pythian Sisters service 1:15 p.m. Sunday and Golden Link Rebekah Lodge No. 2 service 1:45 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 37 Mountain Road, New Glasgow, NS B2H 3W4 or the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
