Obituary of H. Iver MacDermid
DARTMOUTH – H. Iver MacDermid, 96, Parkland at the Lakes, Dartmouth, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2018 in Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late John James and Margaret Elizabeth (MacIver) MacDearmid. As an infant, the family moved to Quincey, Mass., where he lived for 11 years before moving to Kenzieville. There he worked as a scaler at Greene’s saw mill and then as a bookkeeper at Alex MacDonald Motors. He moved to New Glasgow where he was employed with Canada Post for 25 years, retiring in 1985. He was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow for over half a century, serving as an Elder for many years.
Iver thoroughly enjoyed attending the many family parties and gatherings. His hobbies
included daily crossword puzzles, woodworking, house projects, playing Dominos, cards, pool and other games. He became computer literate in his 80’s, especially enjoying family Skype time. As an avid golfer at Abercrombie Country Club, he was reportedly a member of the oldest walking foursome in Nova Scotia, ending his golfing career at the age of 90. He was a paragon of patience never more in evidence than when he stood stoically outside the many fashion boutiques on Ruth’s list between Nova Scotia and Florida. Iver possessed a wonderful sense of humour, love of family and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by daughters; Diane (Jim) Messel, Ottawa; Nancy Smyth (Mike), Halifax; sons, Richard (Pat), Dartmouth; Randy (Cynthia), Westville; grandchildren, Jamie, Katie, Brendan, Melanie, Matthew, Heather, Anna and Mallory; great-grandchildren, Isla, Benjamin, Jackson, Isaac, Cohen, Harrison, Ryland, Iver and Lylah; nieces and nephews, Cheryl, Lynn, Joanne, Colene, Brent, John, Blair, Lois, Harvey, David and Beth; sisters-in-law, Nova Bannerman and Christine Self.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Bannerman); brother, John; son-in-law, Frank Smyth; sisters-in-law, Phyllis MacDermid and Maye Bannerman; brothers-in-law, Donald Bannerman and Stan Self.
The MacDermid family wish to extend a very special thank you to staff at Parkland at the Lakes for their kindness and care during the past five years. They also extend a heartfelt thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and staff on the 4th floor of the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, August 11th in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow with Rev. Dr. Joon Ki Kim officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. J. Kenneth MacLeod. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Interment will be in Kenzieville Cemetery.
