Obituary of Robert Gordon Russell

THORBURN – Rev. Robert “Bob” Gordon Russell, 80, Thorburn, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Toronto, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Russell. He was a graduate of the University of Toronto, Knox College and Dalhousie University. Following Ordination to the ministry of Word and Sacraments in the Presbyterian Church of Canada, he moved to Pictou County to serve at Knox Presbyterian Church, Blue Mountain. After marrying his wife Irene, they served Presbyterian congregations in Ontario and New Brunswick. Later, Bob accepted a term position at St. F.X. University where he taught Philosophy, then a position at the former Nova Scotia Teachers College where he was a founding member of The Institute for Early Childhood Education and Developmental Services. Upon retirement, he and Irene moved to Thorburn where he attended Union Presbyterian Church, enjoyed gardening, photography, nature, and reading. Bob was a devoted husband and uncle. He greatly enjoyed time spent with his grandnephew, Tanner and grandniece, Maya. Surviving are his nieces, Lara (Elden) MacDonald, and their children, Tanner and Maya, Thorburn; Nora-Gene (Randy) Ball, Bedford; sister-in-law, Lois Pepper, Halifax. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Irene Maye (Tanner); sister-in-law, Gene MacDonald; brother-in-law, Alex MacDonald; nephews, Dana MacDonald and Reece Goodwin. A private graveside service will be held in Thorburn Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Lackie officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
