Obituary of Roderick Joseph MacDonald

BAILEY’S BROOK – MacDonald, Roderick “Rod” Joseph, 65, of Bailey’s Brook, Pictou County, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at home. Born in Antigonish, Rod was a son of Mary “Agnes” (Bowie) MacDonald, Antigonish and the late John James “Johnnie Lewis” MacDonald. Rod worked in fishing, farming, and forestry, as well as construction and for more than 30 years worked with the Department of Transportation. It was his passion for farming that made his farming career last all his life. He was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Lismore and served on the Parish Council. Rod was a member of the Cattleman’s Association and Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners Association. A great deal of his community involvement was in assisting his wife June in her many endeavours. Surviving are son, Ronnie (Helen) Farrell, Barney’s River, daughters, Theresa MacLeod, Moncton; Catherine MacDonald, Ottawa; son-in-law, Sheldon MacLeod, Moncton, he was especially proud of his grandchildren Sarah Farrell (Josh Fraser), Jeanne Farrell, Anthony, Christine, Graeme MacLeod; great grandson, Nathan; brothers, Lewis (Catherine), Pine Tree; Bill (Suzanne), Surrey, BC; Francis, Port Moody BC; Doug (Donna), Antigonish; sisters, Mary Simpson (Roy), Murrieta, California; Marg (Ian Rhyno), MacLellan’s Brook; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Also survived by the Feltmate family; sisters-in-law, Kaye Venedam; Hilda Gottschall; Loretta Welsh; Shirley (Billy) MacGillvary; Gwen Feltmate; brother-in-law, William “Billy” (Marie) Feltmate; he will also be missed by his fellow farmers. Rod was predeceased by his wife, Martha “June” (Feltmate) MacDonald on January 2, 2011; father-in-law, William Feltmate; mother-in-law, Agnes (Farrell) Feltmate. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, January 9th in Lismore and District Community Centre, Lismore. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, January 10th from St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Colin MacKinnon presiding. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Rod’s memory to Karen Lynn MacDonald Allergy Awareness Society.
